Own failure – an article by Oliver Koch, Münstersche Zeitung, NRW, Germany
Why the English fail with penalty kicks and the Bavarian team (almost) never loses.

Something went wrong for the English national team. At the 2008 European championship they were not even allowed to participate. And if they do take part in a tournament, they always fail when it comes to penalty kicks. English researchers have launched a big survey to find the reasons for collective penalty kicking failure.

Whether the results impress the English is questionable. It’s not the dumb Germans, cosmic powers or nasty referees that are to blame – the English themselves are the culprits. Not just the kickers, but all 50 million English people.

Because over the years they have talked themselves into believing that the national team simply can’t do it. And that they will fail when it comes to penalty kicking. Over the years it has been imprinted on the kickers’ minds.

What the scientists said about the topic is that stereotypes reinforce themselves.
